The \*Avaśyakachūrṇi\*¹³, while discussing the various constituents of a \*sūtra\*, i.e., \*bhāṣā\*, ‘definition’, \*vibhāṣā\*, ‘option’, and \*vārttā\* ‘annotation’, cites the example of painting. When on the wall the right proportion of a figure is obtained it is then called \*bhāṣā\* or definition of painting; when its various limbs are defined then the \*vibhāṣā\* stage is reached and when the eyes, etc., are painted then the \*vārttā\* or annotation stage is reached.
