The methods of painting on wood are similar, except that \*hiriyal\* is preferred to \*gokaṭu\*, and the work is usually protected by a layer of varnish (\*valicciya\*). The whole is first covered with an even coat of pink, the design sketched on this, and the background filled in with red, and detail as before. Painting on earthenware is done in the same way.
