If, for example, the spiritual conflict of Buddha with the powers of evil had been depicted by some great artist, in the shape of a strong man whose face was torn by conflicting emotions, a wonderful picture might have resulted; but it would not have been peaceful, impersonal, ideal. Such a rendering of ‘expression’ in the face would be quite foreign to the aesthetic and philosophic conceptions of Indian art, which is not at all concerned Idealism
