In a paper read to the Royal Society,⁹ in 1877, upon the Hindu division of the octave, Mr. Bosanquet shows that the fifths and thirds produced by dividing the octave into twenty-two equal intervals do not deviate very widely from the exact intervals which are the foundation of the diatonic scale, the fifth being only ·07 or very nearly 1/3 of a comma¹⁰ sharp, and the major third ·045 or nearly 1/3 of a comma flat.
