In no two Sanskrit works do we find that the râgas agree either as to their names or their notation; the modes or scales of these different râgas are not given, and, in most cases, it is therefore only a matter of conjecture as to how they were performed. In almost these works a somewhat similar classification of the râgas and râginis has been adopted. There are six principal râgas personified as demigods, each of which has a certain number of râginis (personified as the wives of the râgas)—sometimes five and sometimes six—appended to it.
