The \*Rāgs\* of Hindostan vary¹ so much with the locality (those of the Carnatic less so) that there seemed to be no better way of showing them than to place in parallel columns the \*Rāg\* as given by different authorities (see the Table of \*Rāgs\*, opposite). In the first column appear sixty-three \*Rāgs\* as given me by Ashreka Ganga Rām, whose teacher was Balwant Rao of Gwālior, a state which has a high reputation for music. Ashreka seemed to be particularly sure of his knowledge; and from no one else was I fortunate enough to get any certain information about the \*Rāgs\* which employ quarter-tones (see Nos. 2, 26, 33, 35, 36, 40, 41, 49 in App. II). The second column is taken from the \*Bālsangīt-bodh\* (Juvenile Singing Tutor) of T. B. Sahasrabuddhe, of the Poona Gayan Samāj (singing school). The third column is extracted from a list of eighty-three \*Rāgs\* in B. A. Pingle's \*Indian Music\* (Bombay, 1898);
