A third version is a paraphrase of the last two. ‘By which all people are coloured, or elated as soon as they hear it, and by reason of giving pleasure to all, that is known as rāga.’² In all the three definitions, the word rāga is derived from the root ‘rañja’, “to colour,” “to tinge.”
