Editor's Note

v1.c2.1

Rajendralala Mitra’s *The Antiquities of Orissa*, Vol I, was published ‘under orders of the Government of India’ in 1875 and is being reprinted for the first time.

v1.c2.2

Except for minor typographical and other alterations, the present reprint is intended to be verbatim The beginnings of the pages of the original edition are indicated by bold letters within square brackets.

v1.c2.3

It proved particularly difficult to reproduce the plates, for the only copy of the book with which we have been obliged to work was absurdly brittle and worn out. We are indebted to Sri Ranendra Mohan Singha for copying out a large number of these plates, a work that has called for considerable skill and an almost endless patience. Other plates could not be thus copied and had to be reproduced straight from the book. We would have perhaps given this up as a hopeless work but for the keen interest taken in it by Sri Nirode Mukherji and Sri Sudhir Mukherji, with their team of technicians of M/S. Radiant Process, Calcutta, who eventually made the reproductions possible. We cannot thank them enough. The Woodcuts of the texts have been copied by Sm. Mukti Majumdar and Sri Subhash De.

v1.c2.4

We are also thankful to Sm. Anjali Maitra for typing out the whole book and to Professor Haridas Sinharay for seeing the reprint through the press. Sri Balin Roy has been of great assistance to him.

v1.c2.5

We feel particularly happy to express our gratitude to The Asiatic Society, Calcutta,—with which of course the life and work of R. L. Mitra was inextricably bound,—for offering us ungrudging help in the matter of reprinting this book.
