A favourite subject was the story of Bāz Bahādur, king of Mālwā, and his lady-love, Princess Rūpmatī, who are represented in several pictures as riding together by torchlight. A good example in the Calcutta Art Gallery has been reproduced in Plate LXIV of Mr. Havell's \*Indian Sculpture and Painting\*; another, in Mr. C. Hercules Read's rich collection, is of special value because of the label indicating the subject; and a third is on folio 22 of B.M. Add. 21928. Other romances frequently illustrated are the tales of Laila and Majnūn, Khusrū and Shīrīn, and Kāmrūp and Kāmtā.
