¹ Polonnāruwa, alias Kalingapura, or Pulastipura, the modern Topāvewa or Topāwa, represents a much more ancient city, Wijitapura, of which some remains seem to be traceable (Parker, \*Ancient Ceylon\*, pp. 239–41). For the dates of the mediaeval kings see \*Epigraphia Zeylanica\*, vol. i, p. 156. The traditional date for the foundation of Anurādhapura is 457 B. C. The sites of other capitals are discussed by Mr. Parker. Polonnāruwa was abandoned finally in A. D. 1240.
