5.15.4 Chronology of Tamil-Brāhmī inscriptions in the light of the coin-legends
c25.s15.t4.1
A comparative study of the palaeographic features of the Andhra coin-legends with similar features found in the Tamil-Brāhmī inscriptions confirms the chronology of the latter. The late palaeographic forms of *c*, *m*, *ḷ*, *ṉ* and the *puḷḷi* noticed in the coin-legends (Fig. 5.10) occur in the cave inscriptions from about the end of the 1st century or the beginning of the 2nd century A.D. coinciding with the period during which the silver portrait coins with bilingual legends were known to have been issued by the Sātavāhanas.
