Morphophonemics is the study of changes which occur in the process of joining morphemes in a word or words in a sentence, known respectively as internal and external sandhi (*puṇarcci*). In this study, both categories are treated together as the rules governing them are virtually the same. However, while internal sandhi occurs from the earliest inscriptions, cases of external sandhi tend to occur more in the later inscriptions.
