c28.s6.t10.2
**a. eḷai-y** (n.) probably variant of *eṭai* (LT *iṭai*) 'middle' (D. 448) or 'the herdsman caste' (D. 450), referring either to the geographical location or the occupational caste composition of the village. **-y** is the paragogic suffix (or glide in this case).
c28.s6.t10.3
The alternation of *i/e* is discussed in **43.2.a**. The alternation between *-ṭ-* (phonetically *-ḍ-*) and *ḻ* is also attested in Old Tamil and in inscriptions.
c28.s6.t10.4
Cf. LT *eṭupputi* (for *eḻupputi*) (*Kuṟun.* 147:4), *eṭuppi* (for *eḻuppi*) (*Cilap.* 4:79, 5:133); *ēṭakam*/*ēḻakam* 'goat, sheep'; *nāṭi*/*nāḻi* 'unit of time' (*TL*).

Cf. (inscr.) *piḻāri* (for *piṭāri* < *bhaṭārī*), *paḻāra* (for *bhaṭāra*), (*TAS.* II-III, 1992 reprint, Tiruvalla Plates, ca. 9-10 cent. A.D., Lines 46 & 564 respectively); *erumai-y nāḻ kāmuṇṭaṉ* 'the Gāmuṇḍa of Erumaināḍ(u)' (*SII.* XXVI:No. 260 Cōḻa, 11th cent. A.D.).
c28.s6.t10.6
Cf. (Ka. inscr.) *nāḷ gauḍigar* 'village headman' where also *nāḷ* stands for *(G. S. Gai 1946:No. 62.2)*. Cf. *kaḻu-* (for LT *kaṭu*) (**44.1.a**).
c28.s6.t10.7
**b. ūr** (n.) 'village'. See **19.2**.
c28.s6.t10.8
**34.2 *ariti=ṉ*** (*ariti-iṉ*) 'of Arit(i)', N. of the donor in genitive case. *aritiṉ* is construed as *ariti* + *iṉ* (genitive case suffix) with elision of stem-final *-i* (See also **10.3**). Cf. *hariti*, *haritī* (Pkt.) < *hārīti* (Skt.). See *ariyti* (**25.1.b**) for further comments.
c28.s6.t10.9
**34.3 *paḷi*** (*paḷḷi*) (n.) 'hermitage'. See **1.9**.
