c28.s7.t6.1
**77.1 *nālaḻ*** Read *ñāḻal*. (P.) Probably named after the flowering tree, *ñāḻal* / *nāḻal* (D. 2915). See section **4.21.1 (iii)**.
c28.s7.t6.2
Cf. LT *ñaḻal* (*Aka.* 240:1-2; *Kuṟun.* 328:1-2; *Tivā.* 691; *Piṅkala.* 2682; *Cūṭā.* 4:32). We learn from numerous references in Caṅkam literature that *ñāḻal* flowers are small in size and red or golden-yellow in colour. The variant *nāḻal* occurs in *Tēvā.* (II:53.9, variant reading cited in *TL*). The modern Tamil name for the tree is *pulinaka-k- koṉṟai* or *mayil- koṉṟai* (*TL*).
c28.s7.t6.3
Several places in ancient Tamil country were named after the *ñāḻal* tree: *ñāḻal* 'a town on the seacoast' (*Ñāḻal Pattu* in *Aiṅk.*); *ñāḻal mūtūr* 'the ancient town of Ñāḻal' (*Yāpp. Virutti.*: p. 219). Other similar names include *kumiḻi-ñāḻal*, *koṭi-ñāḻal*, *maturai aḻakkar-ñāḻal*: native places of some Caṅkam poets (*Caṅka kāla pulavarkaḷ*: Nos. 186, 205 & 411 respectively).
c28.s7.t6.4
Cf. (inscr.) *ñaḻaṟ-p-paḷḷi* 'name of a village' (*TAS*. II-III, 1992 reprint, Tiruvalla Plates, Line 558, ca. 9-10 cent. A.D.).
c28.s7.t6.5
**77.2 *koṟṟantay*** N. of the donor. Cf. *koṟṟantai* (**67.1**).
c28.s7.t6.6
**a. *koṟṟa-*** From *koṟṟaṉ*. See **67.1.a**.
c28.s7.t6.7
**b. *(a)ntay*** Variant of *antai*, an honorific. See **3.7.a** and **66.2** for comments.
c28.s7.t6.8
**77.3 *pa[ḷi\*]-y*** (*paḷḷi-*) (n.) 'hermitage' **-y** is the paragogic suffix. See **1.9**.
