Orissa, ancient Utkal, is also regarded as an emergent low-land, but like the Tamilnad consists of the deltas of the Mahanadi, Brahmani and Vaitarni, a zone of older alluvium, and laterite plateaus and hills on the west, which form part of the Indian landmass.
