# The Rashtrakutas and their Times c14.32

The Rāṣṭrakūṭas and their Times c14.32

- **Language:** English

### [c14.32](https://indike.org/pramana/ins.general.altekar-1934.c14.32)

Senart, who has edited the inscription, translates the passage as follows: ‘We have here on mount Tiraṇhu formerly given to mendicant ascetics dwelling in the cave, which is a pious gift of ours, a field in the village of Kakhadi; but this field is not tilled nor is the village inhabited.’ It will be seen from the original passage and its translation by Senart that it can hardly support Dr. Pran Nath’s conclusion that ‘a \*kshetra\* could be described as a \*grāma\* and that the word \*vasati\* was used in the sense of cultivation as well as that of habitation.’ As a matter of fact the passage differentiates a \*kshetra\* or field from a \*grāma\* or village in the clearest possible way.
