The Hebbal inscription, dated 975 A.D.,¹⁴⁶ records an assignment of five Mattars to each of the temple dancing girls. This apparently seems to show that the Sanskrit Pandit was getting the same salary as the dancing girl, but we must remember that the respective lands were situated in different localities and their quality and produce may have been different.
