The principal leader of that revolution was a person of the name of Basava. A work in Kanarese entitled Basava Purâṇa gives an account of Basava, but it is full of marvellous stories and relates the wonderful miracles wrought by him. The principal incidents, however, may be relied on as historical. On the other hand there is another work entitled Vijjalarâyacharita, written by a Jaina, which gives an account of the events from the opposite side, since the attacks of the Lingâyatas were chiefly directed against the Jainas, and these were their enemies.
