Jñānadeva was a descendant (\*suta\*) in the pupil's line, that is, really a disciple of Nivṛittinātha. At the conclusion of his work he says that Nivṛittinātha was a pupil of Gahininātha and that the latter was a pupil of Gorakshanātha who himself was a pupil of Matsyendranātha.
