Aurangzīb was reappointed in 1651 to the viceroyalty of the Deccan and selected as his residence Khirkī, which he extended, embellished and renamed Aurangābād. He had at first no dealings with Shivājī, who had hitherto studiously refrained from molesting the imperial dominions and whose depredations in Bījāpur territory were in no way opposed either to Aurangzīb’s interests or inclinations.
