The mythical founder Aṅgiras has been noticed in chapter XVI, and also the divine priest Bṛhaspati. A vaṃśa of the Āṅgirasas is given by the Brahmāṇḍa and Vāyu, and the Matsya gives a long list of the rishis and gotras.¹ Genealogical statements are found elsewhere but are few and brief. ‘Aṅgiras,’ like the names of the other primaeval rishis, is applied indiscriminately to Āṅgirasa rishis; thus Utathya is so called,² and also Droṇa or his father Bharadvāja.³ The names Bṛhaspati⁴ and Bharadvāja⁵ were also freely used instead of patronymics, as will appear, and are often quite vague.
