Ancient tradition was compiled into the original Purana about the ninth century B. C., later religious historical tradition was added till the end of the eighth century B. C., and the chronicles of the kings of the Kali age were incorporated in the Puranas in prophetic guise down to the early part of the fourth century A. D. Such were the three main stages of the compilation of historical tradition in the Puranas.
