This account of the origin of the Purana is supported by copious direct allusions to ancient tradition in the Puranas. These might be cited from many Puranas, but will be taken here chiefly from the Vāyu and Brahmāṇḍa, which have the oldest version in such traditional matters, and also from the Matsya, Brahma and Harivaṃśa, which have the next best versions.
