Ibn Batūṭah has given an account of the paper currency that was used in China when he visited that country as Sultan Muhammad's envoy. He writes :— "The people of China do not use gold or silver in their sales and purchases. They use paper notes on which is affixed the seal of the Khan. Twenty-five such notes are called by the name of balisht (بالشت) which corresponds to the Dinar of our country. When the paper is worn out by constant use, it can be changed at the royal mint free of charge."
