The Cambridge History of India, Vol. I: Ancient India v1.c19.s9.23

### [v1.c19.s9.23](https://indike.org/pramana/ins.general.rapson-1922.v1.c19.s9.23)

The four Nikāyas occupy sixteen volumes of Pāli text. They contain a very large number of references to places. No place on the East of India south of Kaliṅga, and no place on the West of India, south of the Godāvari, is mentioned. The Asoka Edicts, dealing in a few pages with similar matter, show a much wider knowledge of South India, and even of Ceylon. We must allow some generations for this increase of knowledge².
