The first capital of the Sammas appears to have been a town called Sāmūī (also called Sāi, Samūiya or Samma-nagar), the ruins of which have been 'traced near Thatta.'⁶ According to Mīr Tāhir, 'Tatta' was founded later 'on a lucky day settled by Brahmans and astrologers.' ¹ Later Muhammadan chroniclərs regularly represent the Jāms as chiefs of Thatta.²
