Dr. Venkataramaṇayya holds that Sōmēśvara I deceived Vīrarājēndra by a false message promising to meet him at Kūḍal-Saṅgamam while he really meant to carry the war into the Cōḷa country by sending his son Vikramāditya to the south along the west coast; this was why Sōmēśvara went to the western ocean and the Cōḷa inscriptions misrepresent this as a flight. The evidence relied on for this reconstruction is mainly Bilhaṇa's \*kāvya\* (\*Eastern Cāḷukyas\*, pp. 259 ff).
