Codrington (\*Short History\* p. 56) says: 'A first attempt to secure Polonnāruwa was made in or about a.d. 1066 but ended in failure, and Vijayabāhu was compelled to fortify himself at Vātagiri (Wākirigala in Kēgalla district).'
