The beginnings of Marathi literature fall indeed within the period dealt with in this book, but they will not be traced here, because Marathi is more properly regarded as a North Indian vernacular. The bulk of the Marathi literature falling in our period was primarily devotional in nature and is represented by such authors as Jñāneśvara (1290), Nāmdev (1425), Eknāth (1608) and Tukārām (1608-49), names greater in the field of religion than in that of literature.
