The great Jaina writer Somadevasūri (950) flourished in the court of Arikesari II of Vemulavāda (Andhra Pradesh), a subordinate of Rāṣṭrakūṭa Kṛṣṇa III, where the illustrious Kannada poet Pampa also lived. Somadeva was the author of Yaśastilaka campū, Nītivākyāmṛta, and other works. The tale of the Campū is by no means dull, but the main objective of the author is the propagation of Jaina tenets and ethics. The Nītivākyāmṛta reviews the subject-matter of Arthaśāstra from the standpoint of Jaina morals. The author's style is at once learned, pithy and clear. Another contemporary of Kṛṣṇa III was Halāyudha, author of Kavirahasya, a pedantic work which seeks to illustrate the formation of the present tense of Sanskrit roots and at the same time to eulogize the Rāṣṭrakūṭa king. Vādirāja, a pupil of Somadevasūri—a Jain, like his guru—wrote Yaśodharacarita in which he mentions the Pārśvanāthacarita as an earlier work of his; but it is not extant.
