Turning next to philosophical literature, Vātsyāyana (\*c.\* 350-400), the author of the commentary on the \*Nyāya-sūtras\* of Gautama, is ascribed by tradition to South India. But the first writer on Nyāya definitely known to belong to South India is Varadarāja, the author of \*Tārkikarakṣā\* and of a commentary (\*Bodhini\*) on \*Kusumāñjali\* of Udayana; he lived most probably in the middle of the twelfth century. Aparārka’s commentary on the \*Nyāyasāra\* of Bhāsarvajña can be assigned to about the same date. The author was the Silāhāra ruler of Konkan, better known for his commentary on \*Yājñavalkya-smṛiti\*. Two commentaries were written on \*Tarkabhāṣā\*, one by the famous Mallinātha (thirteenth century) and the other by Chennubhaṭṭa (fourteenth century). The most popular manual of logic, \*Tarkasaṅgraha\* (\*c.\* 1625), and the gloss \*Dīpikā\* on it were the work of Annambhaṭṭa, a native of the Chittoor district who also wrote commentaries on other classics on this subject.
