The foundation of the Chola and Vijayanagar empires was marked by notable efforts to elucidate the Vedas. In the reign of Chola Parāntaka I, Venkata Mādhava, who lived in a village on the banks of the Kaveri, wrote the Rigarthadipikā. Under the patronage of the early Vijayanagar sovereigns, notably Bukka I, a large syndicate of scholars, headed by Sāyaṇa, undertook and completed the stupendous task of commenting upon the Samhitas of all the four Vedas and many of the Brāhmaṇas and Āraṇyakas.
