¹ Strabo, xv, 34, 54. Strabo, on the authority of Onesikritos, points out that other authors do not seem to be justified in asserting that slavery was unknown everywhere in India. Megasthenes (Arrian, \*Indikos\*, ch. 10), affirmed it to be a great thing (μέγα) in India that all the Indians were free, and that no Indian slave existed (οὐδέ τινα δοῦλον εἶναι Ἰνδόν). In reality, mild praedial and domestic slavery seems to have been an institution in most parts of India from very remote times.
