¹ The notion of toleration being a royal duty still survives. Bühler was 'told in Rājputāna, a rājā ought not to be exclusive in the point of worship, but favour all the various sects among his subjects' (\*Ind. Ant.\*, vi, 183). This principle has been acted on frequently. The \*Arthaśāstra\* goes so far as to prescribe that the king who has acquired a new territory 'should follow the people in their faith with which they celebrate their national, religious, and congregational festivals or amusements' (Bk. xiii, ch. 5).
