² I used to reject absolutely the story of Sanghamitrā, but am now disposed to admit her real existence. If Mahendra was the brother of Asoka, she probably was the sister, not the daughter, of the latter. According to the \*Mahāvaṁśa\* her death occurred in the ninth year of the reign of king Uttiya. A ruined \*stūpa\* ENE. of the Thūpārāma is believed to have once contained her ashes (\*Mahāvaṁśa\*, ch. 20, transl. Geiger and Wijesinha; Smither, \*Archit. Remains, Anurādhapura\*, p. 9, Pl. III).
