¹ The column still stands at Bhitarī, in the Ghāzīpur District, to the east of Benares, but the statue has disappeared (Cunningham, \*Archaeol. Rep.\*, vol. i, pl. xxix). The inscription on the column, which records the events related in the text, has been edited and translated by Fleet (\*Gupta Inscriptions\*, No. 13). The allusion to the Krishna legend is interesting. See \*J. R. A. S.\*, 1907, p. 976.
