¹ \*Keraḷa\* is the Kanarese form of the Tamil \*Cheraḷa\*. The country was anciently called Cheraḷam or Cheraḷa-nāḍu, and the kings were Cheraḷ-ādan or Cheraḷ-Irum-Porrai, \*Cheraḷam\* means 'mountain-range', and so is equivalent to Malabar (Pundit D. Savariroyan in \*Tamilian Antiquary\*, No. 1, pp. 69–71).
