### [c7.36](https://indike.org/pramana/ins.general.smith-1924.c7.36)

The time dealt with is that extending from the commencement of the historical period in 650 or 600 B. C. to the Muhammadan conquest, which may be dated in round numbers as having occurred in A. D. 1200 in the north, and a century later in the south. The earliest political event in India to which an approximately correct date can be assigned is the establishment of the Saiśunāga dynasty of Magadha about 642 B. C., a few years before the beginning of 'the sixth century—that wonderful century—a cardinal epoch in human history, if ever there was one'.
