² C. Seltman, \*Greek Coins\* 1933 p. 235, says that βασιλέως μεγάλου on Eucratides’ coins is only a translation of \*Maharajasa\*, which cannot be right; when the two legends corresponded, the Kharoshthi translated the Greek, not \*vice versa\*, and \*Maharajasa\* had already been used before Eucratides to translate βασιλέως alone on Demetrius’ bilingual coins, both tetradrachm and bronze pieces; this became its regular use throughout the Greek period. On Saca and Kushan coins, however, a vassal or viceroy might call himself ‘Great King’; so Spalirises (p. 346) and the Nameless king (p. 354).
