I must just mention that another name, Θοάνα, has been brought into discussion and claimed as the one relic, apart from their own name, of the speech of the historical Tochari.⁴ But what Ptolemy does give is a people Θόανοι somewhere on the Silk Route with a town Θοάνα;⁵ and the Θόανοι have been omitted from discussion. Θοάνα is said to be Sogdian drw’n;⁶ but unless some Sogdian document actually makes drw’n a town of the Tochari, Ptolemy’s sixth book is prima facie conclusive against any connection.⁷
