¹ The two forms have been clearly explained by F. K. Ginzel, \*Handbuch der mathematischen und technischen Chronologie\* I, 1906, p. 137; see also W. Kubitschek, \*Grundriss der antiken Zeitrechnung\* 1928 p. 70 (in Müller’s \*Handbuch\*), and especially W. Kolbe, \*Beiträge zur syrischen und jüdischen Geschichte\* 1926 pp. 1 sqq., who argued that the Babylonian form was the original one; I gather from \*Rev.\* E. G. XLVIII, 1935, p. 598 that E. Bikermann in his forthcoming \*Études sur l’administration séleucide\* will maintain that there was only one calendar, the official Macedonian one beginning in autumn, though Orientals might begin with 1 Nisan. Naturally the questions involved cannot be discussed here.
