The gens of the Iroquois, like that of the Greeks and Romans, is the unit of social organization. It is a body of consanguinei, descended from a common ancestor, distinguished by a gentile name, and bound together by affinity and by the rights, privileges, and obligations of the members of the gens. The gens is a natural unit of society, and the basis of the social organization of the Iroquois.
