The pilgrim's narrative continues— North of the Walk, and on a flat rock to the left (according to the D text, the right) of the road, was a large chaitya (ching-shē). In this was an image of the Buddha gazing with uplifted eyes. The explanation Yuanchuang gives is that here Ju-lai for seven days contemplated the Bodhi Tree without moving his eyes gazing at it in gratitude.
