the Majjhimanikāya,¹ recurs verbatim in the Theragāthā (866ff.). Some of the ballads, dialogues between Māra and the nuns,² in the Therīgāthā, are in part counterparts to, and in part other versions of, those which we have found in the Bhikkhunī-Saṃyutta of the Saṃyuttanikāya. A number of other songs and verses of this collection can be traced in the four Nikāyas, in the Dhammapada and the Suttanipāta. In fact, in one passage (Therag. 145) similes of the Nikāyas are even assumed to be known, that is, they are directly quoted. But even if we were to see quotations or loans in all these cases, it would hardly prove the later origin of the two collections as such; for the passages in question might have been inserted later.
