⁴ Compare the employment of Sultan Firuz Tughluq in his youth as a \*Naib Barbak\* and a \*Naib Amir Hajib\*. He was given the command of 12,000 troops on his appointment to the post which shows that these offices had a corresponding military rank (\*vide\* A. 42). Malik Kafur was a \*Barbak\* when he was appointed to lead the invasions of the Deccan. Similarly, Muhammad Tughluq occupied the office of \*Barbak\* for some time before the Tughluqs came to power.
