Let us examine the position of the privileged classes in their two broad divisions—the *Umara* or the nobility and the *Ulama* or theologians together with other religious classes.³

³ It should not be forgotten in speaking of the *Ulama* that there is no room for ordained priesthood in Islam but the theologians have always managed to exist and to shape the religious outlook of the Muslims. So that we are justified in treating them as a separate class.
