The Indian yard has had a very chequered history. Many different measures of a yard were in use which differed from one locality to another and even for various commodities. Sultan Sikandar Lodi introduced a uniform measure of yard (\*gaz\*) for official calculation which works out (with the addition of ¼th of an inch) at 30 inches of the present measure.³ So that our present yard stands in a ratio of 6 : 5 for purposes of rough calculation.
