The courtesan had to be very careful in the choice of her lover and adopt a cautious policy in accepting him. Men disliked women who accepted their love readily. As a preliminary step it was advisable for her to employ shampooers, musicians, jesters and \*pithamardas\* to the feelings of her future lovers. Then the \*vita\* helped her to carry out the offensive. In her lover's company she witnessed cock-fights, quail-fights and ram-fights. She heard the prattle of talking birds and attended musical performances and dramatic shows with him. She made token presents to him and discussed topics relating to the arts with him. All throughout she conversed pleasantly with him. She also visited him in the company of the \*pithamarda\*. Whenever he came to her house, she offered him betel leaves, perfumes and flower garlands and then discussed with him problems relating to poetry and the arts.
