The courtesan was a shrewd person and knew fully well how to take advantage of a favourable situation. She conducted herself like a wife when she knew that her lover was about to gain the favour of the king or if there was any likelihood of his becoming a highly placed officer. The opportune moment for her to act as a housewife was when her lover counted his high profits, or when his cartloads of grain and other goods began arriving or when the harvest was good. She acted as a loving wife when she was certain that her feigned love would not go unrewarded.
