We rather get from our sources the impression that as a rule, the court of the king was the meeting-place for the Brâhmaṇas, where they could best exhibit the arts and sciences learnt by them during their student days. To bring prosperity again to his family, the young Brâhmaṇa of the Somadatta Jātaka goes to Benares and joins the king's service after he has studied in Takkasilâ and on his return finds his parents in poverty (II. 165).
